The Catacombs
Installed in the former limestone quarries on the left bank of Paris, the catacombs were named after the ones in Rome. In fact it is an ossuary, covering a huge area in the underground of the city. Approximately 6 million bones from various Parisian cemeteries were placed here. The Catacombs were opened to the public in 1874. The area covered is a bit more than a mile.
